Provincial Recruitment Workshop April 3-4, 2011

The goal of the workshop was to facilitate in our districts the recruitment of new members. Increasing our membership base will allow us to meet with rising costs of maintaining our organization and to keep extended healthcare premiums affordable. Recruitment is being done through flyers to schools, retirement workshops and media advertising. The specific emphasis of this workshop was to attract associate members as that category has been expanded.
There are a wide variety of associate members, including: retired teachers with commuted or deferred pensions; educational support staff from school boards and schools, such as psychologists, consultants, office support staff, secretaries, custodians and board-employed bus drivers; retired teachers receiving a pension from private schools; and university and college faculty. In upcoming discussions we will determine which of these strategies will be appropriate for our situation in BC.
It was brought to the recruitment committee’s attention that prospective retirees are not always aware that if they plan to move to BC that there are two districts of RTO here. Some effort to increase the awareness of membership in BC districts in the recruitment work done in Ontario is to be discussed by the workshop committee.
